Museum vase based on a work by George Stubbs
George IV when Prince of Wales (1791)
The Prince of Wales is presented as a man of fashion here, riding his magnificent chestnut horse and walking his two dogs. The star of the Garter is the only badge of rank in his costume which otherwise demonstrates his awareness of fashion, wearing blue cut-away frock coat with buff breeches. Though it looks as if the Prince is riding in the open countryside it is in fact Hyde Park overlooking the Serpentine.
George Stubbs (1724 to 1806) was an eminent painter of the time born in Liverpool; he was a self taught artist, exhibiting at the Society of Artists and the prestigious Royal Academy. He had a passionate interest in the anatomy of horses, publishing a definitive work on the Anatomy of the horse in 1766, which drew him great acclaim from the fashionable people of that time including the Royal Family; he particularly enjoyed the patronage of the Prince of Wales which culminated in ths beautiful picture Royal collection@ Her Majesty Queen Eliszabeth II
